Canada West, East Coast Kings play to draw in tourney opener

WALPOLE – The 2014 Junior Chowder Cup tournament is underway, beginning Thursday morning at the Rodman Arena in Walpole with Canada West Black and the East Coast Kings Grey playing to a 2-2 tie in the ’98 Division.

Canada West had to rally twice to earn their one point on Thursday morning. Joey Fiorino garnered the Kings their first lead of the contest with an unassisted goal at 8:20 of the opening half. Ty Westgard had it back to even a little over eight minutes later at 16:25 on a goal assisted on by defenseman Spencer Berry, the 1-1 score lasting until halftime.

The Kings seemed to be on their way to victory after Matt Gosiewski got their lead back just 10-seconds into the second half. The two teams played scoreless for a long stretch thereafter, but with time slipping away, West’s Blake Hayward put away a goal assisted on by Ben Evanish at 21:32 to get back to even.

With neither team able to score the rest of the way, the contest ended as a 2-2 draw.
