New Brunswick falls short against Springfield.

ATTLEBORO – Springfield notched their first ’09 division win of the 2025 Jr. Chowder Cup on Friday evening. They held off a late, second half push from the New Brunswick Kings for the 5-4 victory at the New England Sports Village.

It was a strong start to the contest for Springfield. After an early goal by Alex Kelly gave the Kings a 1-0 lead, Springfield ran off three straight to take control of the scoreboard. Goals from William Mitus, Duncan Rutsch and Tom Pingle gave Springfield a 3-1 advantage at the break.

Springfield made it 4-1 out of the intermission, but they traded goals with New Brunswick in the opening portion of the second.

Trailing 5-3, the Kings got a late goal from Shane Thorne to close the gap to one, but the goal came in the game’s final minute, leaving little time for a comeback. Goaltender Dimitri Huey and the Springfield defense held for the 5-4 victory.

Springfield had a quartet of players with multiple points in the victory. Rutsch (1G, 1A), Mitus (1G, 1A), Duncan McCarthy (2G) and Cole Balog (2A) all got their names on the scoresheet more than once.

Giovanni Miranda (1G, 1A) led the New Brunswick effort with a two-point contest. The Kings’ remaining goals coming from Thorne, Kelly and Noah Richard.
