Whalers Green hold on for first win

WALPOLE – After opening the 2014 Junior Chowder Cup on Thursday with a loss, the Boston Jr. Whalers Green restored their chances of advancing to the ’99 Division playoffs on Sunday by scoring a 3-2 win over the Gulls on Friday morning at Rodman Arena.

Defense and goaltending seemed to be the order of business for much of the first half between the Whalers and Gulls, more than 20:00 elapsing before either team broke through. Diebus Andrew nabbed the game’s first lead for the Whalers at 21:22. The lead, however, was short lived, Daniel Kramer tying it up just 1:35 later with a shorthanded tally for a 1-1 score that lasted until halftime.

Boston got things going a little quicker in the second half, Colin Montgomery reclaiming the lead at 4:38. Andrew then upped it to 3-1 with a shorthanded goal of his own at 13:32. The Gulls once again saved their scoring until late in the frame, Bobby Trivigno coming through at 24:30 to cut the deficit to one, but it was not enough to spark any kind of comeback, the score holding at 3-2 for the game’s remaining 1:30.

Andrew was joined on the score sheet by teammate Ethan Kimball as the game’s only multiple point scorers, with two goals and two assists, respectively. Lanny Korbee was credited with the win in net for the Whalers.
