Whalers hold off Knights for 6-5 victory.

CANTON – The Boston Jr. Whalers Green made a perfect, 3-0-0 run through 2003 Division play in the preliminary round of the 2019 Bob Crocker Jr. Chowder Cup, but it was almost not that way. They had to hold off a second half rally by the Boston Knights to preserve a 6-5 victory on Saturday at the Canton Ice House.

A pair of Whalers’ goals on both sides sandwiched a Sean Lane goal for the Knights to set the score at 4-1 heading into the halftime break.

Troy Hunsicker’s second goal of the game at 0:29 of the second made it a 5-1 advantage for the Whalers barely into the game’s final period. The Knights then reeled off three-straight scores to close their deficit to 5-4 less than halfway through the second half.

Gavin Walsh scored his second goal of the game to give the Whalers a two-goal advantage once again. The Knights, however, were not done. Adam Haytayan scored a power play goal at 21:35 to once again cut the deficit to one. There was still 3:25 remaining, but goaltender Josh Girard and the Whalers defense kept the score where it was and the game ended 6-5 in their favor.
