FOXBORO – New England Pro Am Hockey’s 2018 Jr. Chowder Cup drew to a close on Sunday at the Foxboro Sports Center, but not before Maroon Hockey claimed one of the two trophies awarded on the day. They defeated Players First Hockey 2-0 to earn the title of 2003 division champion.
For the Maroons, it was a trophy that was seemingly theirs all tournament long. In their three preliminary round games, they went 3-0-0, outscoring their opponents 25-3 in the process. They put up another three wins on Sunday en route to their championship bout against Players First, netting 11 and giving up just two in the process.
The championship game did not seem much different from the previous six games, the Maroons controlling the ice from the beginning.
Their play was dominant, but not much scoring was needed. A goal by tournament MVP Danny Zhilkin at 7:57 put Maroon up and set the game’s tone. They added one more – a Cole Eichler goal at 21:46 – but Zhilkin’s goal was a dagger.
The remainder of the game eclipsed as all-tournament goaltender Michael Simpson continued his shutout. Maroon Hockey became 2003 division champions by virtue of their 2-0 win.
