CANTON – It was a tough start to the 2019 Bob Crocker Jr. Chowder Cup for the Squires Hawks. In their first contest of the tournament, they took on Rapid Hockey Development at the Canton Ice House, were unable to hold a lead and ultimately fell 6-4 on Saturday morning.
After Rapid Hockey netted the opening goal just 29-seconds in courtesy of Jack Parker, the Hawks reeled off three straight to take the advantage. Adam Mendelson cut Rapid’s deficit to 3-2 at 22:26 of the first half, where it remained until the break.
A shorthanded goal by Niles Iqusenlins at 5:22 put the Hawks back in front by two, but that was where the good times ended as it was then Rapid’s chance to go on a goal scoring run.
Thomas Cournoyer, Mendelson’s second, Justin Chaput and Mendelson’s third put together a four-goal streak that bolstered Rapid Hockey Development’s 6-4 victory.
Mendelson’s hattrick was seconded by teammate Nelson Smith’s two assists as the game’s leading point getters.
