FOXBORO – As the second day of play began at the 2018 Jr. Chowder Cup, a tight contest early for the New England Nailers ’03 squad went awry late as they fell to Canada West Elite Red 6-2 on Friday morning at the Foxboro Sports Center.
The score was low in the first half, but favored the Nailers for a healthy portion of the opening 25 minutes. Mike Caparco put New England ahead 1-0 with an unassisted tally at 14:06, which is where they remained until a goal in the final minute of the half by Canada West’s Liam Casey sent the teams to the break tied 1-1.
Canada West then took the lead in opening minute out of the half. The Nailers rallied to tie things 2-2 on a goal by Gavin Roe at 4:35, but ran into penalty trouble as the second half progressed, at which point the game got away from them.
Power play goals at 14:25 and 14:39 made it 4-2 Canada West, who did not look back and held on to the lead for good. They added goals from Richard Guarino and Mason Martin late to set the score at its 6-2 final.
Guarino (1G, 1A), Daniel Nekhamiyev (2G) and Liam Bell (2A) all had multipoint showings for the victors, while Caparco (1G, 1A) paced the Nailers, factoring into both of his team’s goals.
Brennan Gallant and Shane Shelest split the winning goaltending duties for Canada West.
