Squirrels’ title defense opens with draw.

FOXBORO – They conquered the ’01 Division at the 2015 Mini Chowder Cup. Then it was the ’01 Division at the 2016 Jr. Chowder Cup. The Black Squirrels began their quest for a New England Pro-Am three-peat at the 2017 Jr. Chowder Cup with a 3-3 draw against the NH Knights on Thursday evening at the Foxboro Sports Center.

The Black Squirrels came out strong in their title defense, Robby Griffin giving them a 1-0 lead just 1:07 into the contest. Last year’s ’01 Division Jr. Chowder Cup MVP Henry Thrun then doubled that advantage to 2-0 at the 11:13 mark.

New Hampshire rallied, Jameson Mitchell cutting the deficit to one at the 20:08 mark of the first half. Liam Copp then had the game back to even, 2-2, with the opening goal of the second half, which came at 9:43.

Liam Connors got the Squirrels their lead back at 16:32 of the second, bringing the score to 3-2. The score held until late, to a point where victory was in sight for the Squirrels, but Knights forward Tyler Toomey spoiled the celebration, netting the 3-3, equalizing goal with just 29-seconds remaining in the contest.

Griffin ended the game as its only multipoint scorer, credited with a goal and an assist.
