Whalers hand Chiefs first loss.

FOXBORO – It has been two up and two down through two days at the 2021 Jr. Chowder Cup for the Cape Cod Whalers. They beat the Chiefs 4-2 on Friday evening at the Foxboro Sports Center in the ’05 division.

A two-goal first half paced the victory for the Whalers. Gates Omicioli scored the game’s first goal and then setup the second – a Christian Maro score at 21:22 of the opening frame – for a 2-0 Cape Cod lead at halftime.

The Chiefs were first on the scoresheet in the second, Riley Schmidt cutting his side’s deficit in half with a score at 1:19, and it was back-and-forth the rest of the way. AJ Sacco re-established Cape Cod’s two-goal lead at 15:15 and Davis Ross had the Chiefs’ deficit back to one at 18:48.

It was not until Henry Butte’s empty net goal with 12-seconds remaining Cape Cod was able to seal their 4-2 victory.
